(March 2012)
St Patrick’s Day came to Umbrella late this year due to a delay in holding the kids school exams. So on March 25th, a sunny afternoon in the courtyard of Machhapuchhre, the children, volunteers and staff gathered for a day of fellowship, festivities and questionably coloured momos. The kids and volunteers had spent the previous week preparing amazing hat, masks and outfits and everyone got into the spirit on the day with lots of face painting.
With everyone decked out in green, Umbrella took to the streets of Swoyambhu to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with a parade, lead with a huge brightly coloured banner courtesy of the Sagarmatha and Gauri Shankar Girl’s homes and St Patrick himself armed with his tinfoil staff, paper hat and green robes. With hand crafted green pinwheels, green hair ribbons and green teekas, the children marched around the neighborhood in honor of “Green Day”. Afterwards, thanks to the hard work of the volunteers and Indu Didi, the children enjoyed a treat of bright green sweet momos which were both delicious and bizarre!
