The Umbrella 7′s tournament is a rugby charity event involving school teams. This competition is slightly different to others as not only do participants enjoy playing one of the most exciting brands of rugby and enhancing skills used in the 15-a-side game, it also helps vulnerable children in Nepal, one of the world’s poorest countries.
In the last number of years, 7-a-side rugby has taken off as an international sport. So much so that in 2016 this format will be introduced in the Rio Olympics. It provides an opportunity for smaller rugby powers to shine, with its fast, wide-open, low-impact style.
Fiji is one of the world’s leading powers in the men’s event, while Canada is one of the top-ranked women’s teams. Ireland is currently the only major rugby-playing nation that does not have a professional 7-a-side team and, without an organised 7′s competition at schools level, the gap is set to grow.
The Umbrella 7′s tournament has been fully endorsed by Jamie Heaslip, Irish international, British & Irish Lion and The Umbrella Foundation’s patron, who in June 2011 volunteered with us in Nepal.

To add to the incentive to fundraise, we are delighted to announce that Jamie Heaslip has once again offered to do a training session with teams raising in excess of €2000 (or €165 per player). Last year Kilkenny College succeeded in raising the funds and had a brilliant afternoon with Jamie going through various aspects of their game with the Lions, Ireland and Leinster Legend! There’s no doubt it’s a challenge but that’s where teamwork comes into play!
The event takes place just over a year since the earthquake that struck on the 25th of April last year. Since then, there have been many aftershocks, as well as the blockade imposed on the country, further exacerbating the difficult road to recovery. Events like the Umbrella 7s raise critical funds for people in need in one of the worlds poorest countries.

The event takes place just over a year since the earthquake that struck on the 25th of April last year. Since then, there have been many aftershocks and there has been a blockade imposed on the country, further exacerbating the difficult road to recovery. The Brawl for Nepal 2015 raised €21k and we want the Brawl for Nepal 2016 to be even bigger, raising vital funds for Umbrella so we can continue to provide outstanding care and support to the children in the homes, the reintegrated children and their families, the next steps youths and all the other projects that Umbrella is involved with.
Training will take place for about 7/8 weeks prior to the big event in May, with 2 training sessions a week. Get in touch with Ciara (irishoffice@umbrellanepal.org) if you’re interested in the challenge or you know someone who’d like to take part!
